Artist Statement

My practice is concerned with the relationship between material, process, and perception. Fiber and textile provide a recurring language, though the forms and materials continually evolve.

I am drawn to how matter holds memory, conceals and reveals, and shifts meaning through accumulation and transformation. I work across familiar and unfamiliar materials, including those that emerge through extended cycles of experimentation, allowing new possibilities to develop through repetition, resistance, and discovery.

My process retains the rapid prototyping mindset I developed during years as a designer, where inventiveness, precision, and an obsessive attention to space and materials shaped every decision. That discipline now meets a slower, less certain inquiry. I move continually between intention and emergence, allowing the inherent qualities of each material—its limitations, unpredictability, and potential—to shape the work as much as my own direction.

Underlying my practice is an ongoing exploration of how we seek connection: to place, to one another, and to forces larger than ourselves. Through material transformation, the work considers how meaning accumulates over time, where structure gives way to intuition, and how physical processes can make visible experiences that resist language.

Bio

Christina Jensen Vicente is an artist working across fiber, experimental biomaterials, and mixed media. Her practice is grounded in over two decades as a designer and creative director at CHANEL, where she developed a rigorous, materials-first approach to making and a deep sensitivity to the relationship between space, texture, and perception.

Drawing from this foundation, Vicente’s interdisciplinary studio practice is rooted in process, experimentation, and the transformation of materials. She often revisits hand techniques connected to her Scandinavian heritage—including weaving, stitching, knotting, and layering—while exploring new material possibilities through cycles of discovery and refinement.

Vicente earned a master’s degree in interior design from Pratt Institute. She lives and maintains her studio in southwest Florida.
